Breast Implants Newport Beach CaliforniaBreast enlargement, also known as breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure which can enhance a woman’s body contour by augmenting the size and shape of the breasts. The procedure may be used to enlarge the breasts for women who are unhappy with a small breast size, to correct a reduction in breast volume caused by pregnancy, to even out a difference in breast size, or to reconstruct the breast after breast surgery.

The breast augmentation surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure in our surgical center. General anesthesia is commonly used. Incisions may be located under the breast, under the arm, or around the nipple. An implant is then inserted through the incision and placed either under the breast tissue or under the muscle. The implants are made of an outer silicone shell that is filled with either saline or silicone gel. Implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and the outer surface may be either smooth or textured.

The sub muscular placement of the implants, which is under the breast muscle, is associated with a decreased risk of capsular contracture (contraction of the tissue capsule surrounding the implant), mammography interference, and implant palpability (seeing or feeling the implant edges). However, there are those who feel that a more natural appearance can be obtained with the sub glandular placement, or above the chest muscle. During the consultation, the doctor will be able to help you decide the implant type and placement that is best for you.

Choosing The Implant Size

The implant will determine the shape of your augmented breasts. There are both round and teardrop-shaped (anatomical) implants. The one that is right for you will depend the look that you want to achieve. The anatomical implant creates a gentle slope that results in a fuller lower area. The round implant, on the other hand, produces a round curve in the upper portion of the breast. Breast width should also be considered when determine the proper implant. The width of the breast will determine the amount of cleavage between the breasts and the outer curves. You may want to balance this with your hips.

Breast Augmentation Santa MonicaIt’s very important that patients have realistic expectations. Bra cup size is often the way that women think about breast size. A woman who is currently a size ‘A’ and hoping for a size ‘C’ must have sufficient existing breast tissue coverage. If she does not, the implant edges may be visible or palpable and there may be other possible risks.

Post-Operative Care

Patients will need to arrange for someone to drive them home and stay with them for the first twenty-four hours after the breast enlargement surgery. Some pain may be experienced during the first day or two, though this can be easily controlled with pain medication. As the body adjusts to the implants, patients may also experience a tightness in the breast area.

Patients will be able to move about freely after surgery, though they are required to wear a bra at all times during the first two weeks, except when showering. Moderate exercise including walking and using a stationary bike can be resumed after the first weeks, though heavy lifting should be avoided for two to three weeks and vigorous exercise like jogging and aerobics should be avoided for three to four weeks. Most patients can return to work within just a few days after surgery.

The breasts will be a bit swollen after surgery, but the actual shape and size will become evident within a few weeks. Some asymmetry may occur, though patients should remember that most breasts have some asymmetry naturally.

Potential Complications

Potential complications associated with breast enlargement may include capsular contracture, bleeding, infection, and irregularity of the skin. The implants may leak through even a small hole, resulting in a flat implant that requires surgical replacement. This risk can be avoided with proper precautions. Patients with diabetes, a history or radiation, autoimmune disease or those who smoke generally have an increased risk of delayed wound healing. It is essential that patients undergo a thorough medical evaluation prior to surgery so that these potential risks can be addressed.

Breast enlargement has been proven safe and effective and has produced pleasing and satisfying results for many women. Patients considering breast enlargement should be psychologically stable and have realistic expectations. A consultation with the doctor can help to determine if you are a good candidate for breast augmentation.

Q - What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation, also known by the terms breast enlargement and augmentation mammoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure which uses an implant to augment the size and shape of the breasts. Breast augmentation can enlarge small breasts, restore breast volume after pregnancy, even out differences in breast size, and reconstruct the breast after breast surgery.

Q - How do I know if I’m a good candidate for breast augmentation?
A preliminary consultation is the best way to determine if you’re a good candidate for breast augmentation. In general, however, the procedure may be appropriate for women who are psychologically stable, realistic in their expectations, and looking to improve their breast size and shape. Realistic expectations are particularly important when it comes to breast augmentation. For example, women seeking a “C” cup size who are currently an “A” must have adequate existing breast tissue coverage otherwise you will be warned of visible or palpable implant edges and other potential risks.
