Q - What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation, also known by the terms breast enlargement and augmentation mammoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure which uses an implant to augment the size and shape of the breasts. Breast augmentation can enlarge small breasts, restore breast volume after pregnancy, even out differences in breast size, and reconstruct the breast after breast surgery.

Q - How do I know if I’m a good candidate for breast augmentation?
A preliminary consultation is the best way to determine if you’re a good candidate for Breast Augmentation. In general, however, the procedure may be appropriate for women who are psychologically stable, realistic in their expectations, and looking to improve their breast size and shape. Realistic expectations are particularly important when it comes to Breast Augmentation. For example, women seeking a “C” cup size who are currently an “A” must have adequate existing breast tissue coverage otherwise you will be warned of visible or palpable implant edges and other potential risks.

Q - What are the implants made of for breast augmentation?
Breast implants are made of an outer silicone shell which may be filled with either saline or silicone gel. Implant may be smooth or textured and they may be either round or anatomical in shape.

Q - What happens during a consultation for breast augmentation?
During a consultation for Breast Augmentation, your medical history will be evaluated and the details of the procedure discussed. The surgeon will discuss certain choices that will need to be made such as the size and shape of the implant as well as the incision and implant placements  You will be able to view before and after photographs of our previous Breast Augmentation patients. Preoperative instructions will be given to you once you decide to go ahead with the Breast Augmentation surgery.

Q - Where is the breast augmentation procedure performed?
The Breast Augmentation surgery is performed in our surgical center on an outpatient basis.

Q - What form of anesthesia is the breast augmentation procedure performed with?
The Breast Augmentation procedure is most often performed with the use of general anesthesia.

Q - How is the breast augmentation procedure performed?
Incisions are first made which may be located under the breast, in the armpit, or around the nipple. The breast implant is then inserted through the incision and may be located wither under the breast tissue (sub glandular) or under the muscle (sub muscular). Once positioned, the incisions are then closed.

Q - How long is the surgery for breast augmentation?
Breast Augmentation usually takes one to two hours to complete.

Q - Can I drive myself home after my breast augmentation surgery?
Patients will need to have someone drive them home after their Breast Augmentation surgery.

Q - Will I need to have someone stay with me after my breast augmentation surgery?
Patients should arrange for someone to stay with them for the first twenty-four hours after their Breast Augmentation surgery.

Q - Where are the incisions made for breast augmentation?
There are several possible locations for Breast Augmentation incisions including under the breast, in the armpit, or around the nipple.

Q - Will breast augmentation leave scars?
Breast Augmentation will result in scars. However, the incisions and resulting scars tend to be well-concealed either under the breast, in the armpit, or around the nipple and they will fade with time.

Q - Will I experience much pain after my breast augmentation surgery?
Patients can expect some pain and tightness in the breast area for the first day or two after surgery. This can be controlled with medication.

Q - What can I expect of the recovery after breast augmentation?
Any pain that patients experience during the first day or two after surgery can be controlled with medication. Patients can expect the breast to be somewhat swollen during recovery, though the actual shape and size will be apparent within a few weeks. Some asymmetry may result, though most breasts are naturally asymmetrical to some degree. A bra will need to be worn at all times except when showering for two weeks after surgery. Heavy lifting will need to be avoided for two to three weeks.

Q - When can I return to work after undergoing breast augmentation?
Patients are often able to return to work within a few days after Breast Augmentation surgery.

Q - When can I exercise after undergoing breast augmentation?
Moderate exercise, including walking or riding a stationary bike, can be resumed after the first week. More strenuous exercise like jogging or aerobics will need to be postponed for three to four weeks.

Q - What are the risks of breast augmentation?
As with all types of surgery, there are potential complications that may occur with Breast Augmentation. Delayed wound healing may occur in patients with diabetes, a  history of radiation, autoimmune disease or those who smoke. Other potential complications may include bleeding, capsular contracture, infection, irregularity of the skin, and implant leakage. Potential risks can be addressed by undergoing a thorough medical evaluation prior to surgery.

Q - Is breast augmentation covered by insurance?
When surgeries are performed for medical reasons, such as excessive hooding of the upper eyelids, impaired vision, and breast reduction, insurance may cover part of the cost of the procedure. Breast augmentation is typically not covered by insurance when performed for cosmetic reasons only. Some coverage may be available when treating a congenital deformity or reconstructing the breast. We will assist you in checking with your insurance carrier.

Results my vary from person to person, as to recuperation time and healing times.
Any surgery has risks, all risks and potential complications should be discussed with your doctor.
