Laser eyelid surgery, also referred to as laser blepharoplasty, is a procedure designed to restore a more youthful appearance to the eyes by improving baggy or droopy eyelids. The laser provides the ultimate precision for eyelid surgery, serving to seal small blood vessels so there is very little bleeding during surgery. This minimizes bruising and swelling and provides a more pleasant recovery.
Baggy lower eyelids are the result of enlarged fat deposits under the skin which are hereditary and unrelated to diet. Dr. Abergel’s laser technique is extremely effective in removing these bags and restoring a normal shape to the eyes. Unlike older surgical methods, the laser involves no cuts through the skin which means that stitches are not necessary and scars are avoided. When treating the upper eyelids, however, a crescent of skin is excised and sutures are used. While this will result in a small scar, it is well-concealed within the eyelid crease and further fades with time.
Dr. Abergel performs laser eyelid procedures in our state-of-the-art, state-licensed surgery center and in our fully-equipped laser center. Local or twilight anesthesia may be used and the procedure takes about thirty to forty-five minutes to complete. Once you have recovered in our certified recovery room, you will then be able to rest in the comfort of your own home. Bruising and swelling after laser eyelid surgery are minimal in most cases. Patients are typically able to return to work within three days after lower eyelid blepharoplasty and within seven days after upper eyelid blepharoplasty.
Cosmetic surgery, like any surgery has risks and Dr. Abergel will discuss these with you in detail to help you make an informed decision. However, since the laser seals and coagulates blood vessels as it cuts, bleeding is almost completely avoided and the risk of complication is greatly reduced. Furthermore, the risk of infection is minimized because the laser also sterilizes the tissue.
When performed for medical reasons, such as excessive hooding of the upper eyelids that impairs vision, the laser eyelid surgery may be covered in part by your insurance company. We will be happy to help you in checking with your insurance carrier. Call us today for an appointment at (310) 829-2005.
