Radiesse is a type of injectable filler which is FDA-approved for the correction of moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. Radiesse is commonly used to improve the appearance of nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and other facial wrinkles. It may also be used to shape and contour facial areas like the chin, cheeks, nose or jaw line.

Radiesse is made up of microspheres of calcium hydro-xylapatite which are suspended in an aqueous gel. When injected beneath the skin, these microspheres form a scaffolding of sorts on which the body’s own collagen grows. While Radiesse does produce an immediate, initial plumping, extended correction can also be seen as new collagen forms for as much as one to two years after treatment.

Dr. Abergel performs the Radiesse procedure in his office. A topical anesthetic may be used to optimize the patient’s comfort, though discomfort is generally minimal. Dr. Abergel uses an ultra-fine needle to inject the Radiesse beneath the skin. Depending on the amount of correction intended, the procedure may take anywhere from fifteen to forty minutes to complete.

As with any injectable procedure, some minor swelling or redness may occur lasting up to one to two days afterward.
