Q - What is breast reduction?
Breast reduction, known technically as reduction mammoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure which removes excess fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts in order to make them smaller, lighter and firmer. During surgery, the size of the areolas may be reduced as well. Breast reduction can relieve a variety of problems associated with large or heavy breasts including back and neck pain, skin irritation, skeletal deformities, breathing problems, shoulder indentations from bra straps, poor posture, self-consciousness and interference with normal daily activities.
Q - How do I know if I’m a good candidate for breast reduction?
If you have realistic expectations and are looking to reduce heavy or sagging breasts, then Breast reduction may be right for you. The procedure is particularly beneficial for women who are experiencing health problems and/or extreme self-conscious as a result of very large, heavy breasts.
Q - What happens during a consultation for breast reduction?
During a consultation for Breast reduction, the surgeon will evaluate your medical history and discuss all details of the procedure. You will be given an opportunity to view before and after photographs of our previous Breast reduction patients. Q - How is the breast reduction surgery performed?
For Breast reduction, incisions are made around the areola and extending in a vertical line below the nipple and horizontally in the fold beneath the breast. The nipple-areolar complex is moved to a higher position and excess fat, tissue and skin are removed. If necessary, the areola can be reduced in size as well. The incisions are then closed and covered with a light dressing and a surgical bra is worn. Liposuction of the axillary area may also be used to reduce excess fat deposits and further enhance the results.

Breast reduction can take anywhere from two to four hours on average to complete.

Patients will need to have someone drive them home after their Breast reduction surgery.

It’s often a good idea to arrange for someone to stay with you for the first twenty-four hours after your Breast reduction surgery.

Q - Will breast reduction leave scars?
The incision made for Breast reduction will result in some permanent scarring, though every attempt is made to make the resulting scar as inconspicuous as possible. The scars will appear red and lumpy for the first few months after surgery but they will fade and become less noticeable within six to eighteen months. Bras and bathing suit can usually conceal the scars. Smokers are more likely to develop poor healing and wide scars.
Q - Will I experience much pain after my breast reduction surgery?
Patients may experience some initial discomfort which can be controlled with medication and will subside daily.
Q - What can I expect of the recovery after breast reduction?
Patients can expect some bruising and swelling after Breast reduction which will fade within a few weeks. A surgical bra will need to be worn during the initial healing phase. The breasts may appear slightly mismatched or you may have unevenly positioned nipples. The new shape of the breasts will be apparent within six months to a year. The ability to breast feed may be reduced after surgery.
Q - When can I return to work after undergoing breast reduction?
Patients should plan on being out of work for about two weeks after the Breast reduction surgery.

Patients will need to postpone strenuous activities for about three to four weeks after the Breast reduction surgery.
Q - What are the risks of breast reduction?
Though Breast reduction is a safe procedure when performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, there is always some degree of risk as there is with any surgery. Some potential complications may include bleeding, infection, and reactions to the anesthesia. Small sores may develop around the nipples is some patients and these can be treated with antibiotic creams. Following your surgeon’s advice before and after surgery can help to reduce your risks.
